Existing Programmes for Individuals in the Juvenile Justice System who May Have a Learning Disability

This presentation explores the relationship between academic difficulties and involvement in the juvenile justice system and contains three sections. The first section reviews literature on (a) common characteristics among young offenders, (b) factors that put youth at risk for negative outcomes, and (c) interventions for youth who struggle in school. The second section presents results from interviews with stakeholders (teachers, students, and parents) revealing risk and protective factors for youth who are either involved, or are at-risk of becoming involved in the justice system. The final section discusses services being offered in Britain, Canada, China, and the United States for individuals in the juvenile justice system who may have a learning disability.
